Identifying Appropriate Contributions
Everyone either enjoys how they contribute, or they feel drained by it. Our experience with Authentic Life Expression is limited by how much or little we know about ourselves. We also have difficulty anticipating the reception we will receive when we contribute in a way we enjoy. The quality of our work is derived from the ability to interact with others in a way that serves both of us. It is not about compromise, but the ability to define an offer in a way that others see a benefit. Many of us compromise ourselves by not first focusing on the innate contribution we make to others. Instead, we focus on the idea of work as effort and try to fit into the employer’s idea of how we should perform. This prevents us from taking complete responsibility for how we want to show up. By not identifying those we work best with, and not creating the environment we need to make our contribution work, we become at the effect of these circumstances.
There are three obstacles, or barriers, that get in the way of choosing appropriate contributions. They are: 1) we focus on what we do, and lose the vision of what we could be; 2) we focus on what we get, not realizing that this minimizes receiving, and; 3) we idealize what we do so we do not have to be responsible for creating our passion. This creates four options about where we are in our Authentic Life Expression. First, we may be caught Acting, because we have no connection to the contribution we are making. Second, we may be trapped in Performing, because we believe it is a dog eat dog world. Third, we may be locked into Dreaming, where we enjoy thinking about possibilities, rather than doing them. Finally, as a Co-Contributor, we take ownership of how we show up and seek individuals who are consciously capable of responding to us.
What Is Authentic Life Expression?
We have the idea in our society that we should do things to make money. We are in a very materialistic society. One of the first things parents want is to make sure we have a stable job (that provides a steady income) so we will not have to rely on them for money. We then make sure we are not doing anything on the edge, because it is insecure and we do not know if we will make it. We tend to look at our life work in terms of a certain job or occupation. Guidance counselors in high school look at pre-defined jobs in this way.
From this, we may get the idea that jobs exist in a certain way and we cannot make them up ourselves. Jobs are created by some mysterious source out there and do not come from within us and our heart. This materialistic, categorical orientation to life work creates a lot of pain and frustration. In fact, that is why people are in so much pain. We bought the premise that work has to be a certain way, look a certain way, and support us in a certain way, and we have no choice about our participation. In a job, the further down the hierarchy we are, the less choice and creativity we experience. Why would anyone want to do this? We would have to maintain a lot of Conditioning, a Distant Defense Style and lowered expectations to survive this kind of Objectification.
Seeking survival or outer success is not a Life Expression, but rather a career. These are the levels where we have been sold a bill of goods about how we should do things for others, where our fears and frustrated desires run us. We can identify how Outer Success defines us by how much competition we seek. Our need to perform is an indication we are in a job that fundamentally compromises us. Missing is the capacity to grow and feel enthusiasm and joy about the path we are on. Our defenses cut us off from Universal support, which pushes us in a false direction. It turns out that the more success we find, the more we have to give up our true aspirations.
The final distraction is being able to do things one day at a time without getting lost in our dreams of greatness. While everyone is naturally great at contributing their ‘thing,’ when our personality creates Attachments, Positions and Projections about our work, we are always handicapped. This is because Idealization gets in the way of making our possibilities real. Others find themselves hanging out and thinking about what they want to, but they never get around to it. Some of us end up choosing partners and friends who believe more in our possibilities than we do. We create conflict and justify why things are not perfect to keep from confronting our real fears.
By trusting our Creative Being, and realizing we can manifest a larger context in which to contribute, we take responsibility for our destiny. It opens the door to being Co-Creative with others and supports defining ourselves in our own terms. This allows us to be trusted by others so they can become committed to us. All great Authentic Life Expression is based on a personal relationship where our insights into the needs and desires of others give us the capacity to make a difference in their lives. We can then define ourselves as agents of the Universe. From this perspective, where we own our creative nature, we are able to respond without being compromised. Service to others becomes a motivating force in our growth. Being able to differentiate ourselves from our clients allows us to become natural contributors (which opens us up to synergistic ways of producing results). This way, our life work becomes co-creative and mutually fulfilling because it is an ongoing discovery and mystery.
